In January's issue:

LightWave v9.6 released
The fifth free upgrade to LightWave v9, implements and resolves more than 625 feature requests and reported issues since v9.5 was released and introduces more than a dozen new features including
  • Car Paint node (shown right)
  • Layout snapping
  • FiberFX updates
  • Drag and drop functionality
  • Many more...

"This LightWave update again illustrates NewTek’s ability to quickly provide artists with the latest innovations to stay at the top of their games and do their best work,” said Jay Roth, president 3D division, NewTek. "Now more than ever, LightWave’s many benefits, including the ability to be used in tandem with other applications, make it a necessary part of the pipeline for those doing 3D projects of any kind."

LightWave v9.6 is now available for Windows and Mac OS X

"I've said it before on these boards, and I'll say it again....NewTek really proved themselves about their commitment to their application and userbase with this last cycle of LightWave. v9.6 is as solid of a 3D application as they come and like many others, it has made me more excited for v10."
- Larry Vasquez (on several forums)

Picture of the month: Happy New Year

It seemed appropriate to feature not only a great picture full of the joys of the new year, but also one created entirely in LightWave v9.6 by French artist Laurent Rouquette known as Tartiflette on the forums.

Web news: Evenflcw's LScripts

Dan Dulberger is well-known on the forum for giving advice to people creating scripts. Here he has made some of his own scripts available to the public. I find the ef Multi Service (pictured) one the most useful, but all these scripts are a boon to LightWavers everywhere.

Go get them for yourself

Web news: WINE Screamernet

As LordTangent himself says in his blog:

Yes, it is possible to run lwsn.exe (v9) under the influence of Wine. Even multithreading works! Running lwsn.exe in "-3" (batch mode) is pretty trivial, which means it would be possible to control it with most Linux render queues.

Screamernet on WINE

(It's obviously LINUX renderfarm time since Lonnie Waugh has posted his solution for BNR too.)

Plugin news: Jovian
People have been waiting for a modern replacement for Picky, Rahul Powar's excellent color picker plugin for LightWave 6.5 for a long time now. That wait is almost over with Ken Nign's upcoming Jovian. These exclusive shots of the interface don't give you the full information, but this is one plugin that should be in every LightWave user's collection.

Project news: Nike Sparq
Client: Nike
Production Co: Oh Hello
Creative Director: Dan Brown
Producer: Nathan Barr'
Music: Matt Hutchinson
Lead Designer, Animator: Stephen Fitzgerald

This is a spot I worked on with Oh Hello out of Seattle. The shoes were provided by Nike in Maya format, and I converted them to LightWave format where I surfaced, lit, rigged, animated, and rendered the spot.

It was a really fun spot to make because the only directive was to make the shoes "look good", and beyond that they gave us free reign.

We only had three weeks from concept through delivery, and I was the only guy on the production side, but everything worked so smooth between the client, Oh Hello, and myself, that I didn't even have to pull a single late night.

I definitely credit a lot of that to LightWave for its ease of use.

- Stephen "monovich" Fitzgerald

You can see the spot for yourself here and read more about it here.
